General Information
The Malta Public Libraries consist of the main Central Public
Library which is situated at Floriana, 7 Regional Libraries
and 38 Branch Libraries. Central Public Library
| Apart from holding the largest
collections, the Central Public Library administers and
maintains all the other
Branch and Regional Libraries. There are 6 libraries
hosted in the building being: the Adult and Junior Libraries,
the Melitensia Library, the Reference Library, the Audio-Visual
Library and the Special Needs Library. |

The Services within
the Library have all been computerised and are all in
line with the Government's One-Stop-Shop policy. The
Library was awarded the People's Management and Satisfaction
Award in 1999, and was the first Government entity to
launch the Quality Service Charter on 11/5/1999 |
There are several sections within the building that clients
may be unaware of, but whose services are fundamental to
the Library process within the Institution. The Acquisitions
Section, for example, is responsible for the purchasing of
new material that is then distributed to all the libraries.
The Cataloguing Section catalogues all the material that
is purchased and is also responsible for the inputting and
upkeep of all the library material present in the Catalogue.
The Area Libraries Support Unit co-ordinates and maintains
all the Branch and Regional Libraries throughout the island,
while the IT Support Unit delivers internal IT training,
maintains all hardware in the Department and supports the
Library Information System. A Bindery Section also repairs
books that get damaged due to usage.

Regional Libraries
These libraries open daily like the Central Public Library
and their main purpose is to serve as a focal point for
the surrounding Branch Libraries. There are seven in
all and five of them are already computerised.
Branch Libraries
These Libraries are situated in almost every town and village
throughout the island. Most of them are located within
Government Schools while some of them are hosted by the
Local Councils. They offer the same collections that
are present at the Central Public Library and at the
Regional
Libraries, but on a much smaller and generic basis. Their
opening times vary from 4 hours to 12 hours per week
depending on the agreements that are currently being
made with the
Local Councils. Nine of these libraries are already computerised.
