Area Libraries
To compliment the services given at the Central Public Library,
there exist several Area Libraries that are spread out in
almost every town and city in Malta. These are divided into
two groups - Branch and Regional Libraries. The Branch Libraries
operate on a part-time basis while the Regional Libraries
operate during normal library hours like those indicated
for the Central Public Library.
The collections present in
these libraries are similar to the ones available at the
Central Public Library with the exception of the Audio
Visual Library, although there are some Libraries that are
offering
Internet service that is being sponsored by the area Local
Council. One must always produce his/her Library Card
or Tickets depending on whether the library in question
is computerized or not. Eventually, the old Ticket (Browne)
system will be done away with when all the Area Libraries
are networked.
Since the year 1999, the Department has embarked on the
project of finalising a co-operation agreement with Local
Councils involving in its entirety the accountability or
joint membership of Local Councils in the administration
of Regional and Branch libraries. To date, 40 Local Councils
have signed the agreement and are collaborating with the
Department in upgrading the services rendered by these librarians.
