Consultation

  1. A researcher is requested to present his/her identification document on entering the Reading Room.
  2. A researcher is requested to complete the request form for Library material in legible handwriting and submit all the requested details.
  3. A researcher wishing to consult manuscripts or rare books is requested to produce a letter of recommendation from a recognised educational body, unless he/she can prove that he/she is in possession of relevant academic qualifications to carry out research in the area; in default of that, he/she shall not be allowed to consult original documents but only microfilms, if available.
  4. A researcher is not allowed to request more than eight manuscripts or books per day.
  5. Manuscripts or books in a poor state of conservation are not given for consultation but must be viewed on microfilm, if available.
  6. Loose parchments may only be viewed on microfilm except under very special circumstances, for example if the document is to be studied for purposes of diplomatica.
  7. Pencils only are to be used for taking notes in the Reading Room. Any form of ink, highlighters, correcting fluids and pointed instruments may not be introduced into the Reading Room.
  8. Pages selected for photocopies are to be marked by the user himself with the markers provided.
  9. Newspapers are to be viewed on microfilm, if available.
  10. No delivery of material is made between 12.15 hrs and 13.30 hrs and after 17.00 hrs between 1st October and 15th June and after 12.45 hrs on Saturdays and between 16th June and 30th September.
  11. Manuscripts or books are to be handed over to the Reading Room staff and checked before the researcher leaves the National Library premises.
